Overview

The University of Washington (UW) Graduate School offers application fee waiver options to eligible applicants who demonstrate financial need or who have participated in specific graduate preparation programs. These waivers allow qualifying applicants to request that the standard application fee not be paid during the application process — but must be requested before payment.

Who Can Apply

  • Domestic Applicants
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented applicants may qualify for a fee waiver if they:
  • Demonstrate financial need or financial hardship based on income guidelines; OR
  • Have participated in qualifying graduate preparation programs such as McNair Scholars or PPIA Fellows.

These applicants can request the waiver through the UW Graduate School’s online application portal after submitting their application but before paying the fee.

  • International Applicants

International students on F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible for the UW Graduate School’s application fee waiver due to federal eligibility requirements tied to visa status.

How It Works

Step 1 – Submit Your Application

Complete all required sections of the UW Graduate School application as normal.

Step 2 – Request a Fee Waiver

After submitting your application (but before paying the fee), log in to your Applicant Status Portal and select “Request an Application Fee Waiver.”

• For financial need waivers, answer the eligibility questionnaire and provide your annual income and family size.

• For program-based waivers (e.g., McNair Scholars or PPIA Fellows), upload verification documentation from the program director.

Step 3 – Wait for Review

UW Graduate Enrollment Management Services (GEMS) typically reviews requests within 1–2 business days (excluding university holidays). You’ll receive email updates once your waiver is approved or denied.

Deadline Note: Requests must be made at least 7 days before your program’s application deadline to allow sufficient time for review.

Why It Matters

  • Reduces financial barriers for eligible applicants by eliminating the application fee.
  • Encourages broader access for students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. UW Graduate School
  • Supports applicants participating in structured preparation programs with fee relief. UW Graduate School

However, because international students on student visas are not eligible, you may need to consider other funding or departmental assistance if you cannot meet the fee requirement.
