For the full-time and partial (exchange) programs, specific eligibility may apply, and applicants are advised to verify their sending country’s bilateral agreements with Hungary.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be nominated by the Sending Partner of the applicant’s country
- Open to non-Hungarian citizens only (including those with dual citizenship or permanent residence status in Hungary)
- Prior Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders can only reapply for a higher-level program (e.g., bachelor’s to master’s)
- Applications from former scholarship holders with an uncompleted program or postponed enrollment are restricted
Scholarship Values
- Tuition-free education: Exemption from tuition fees
- Monthly stipend:
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, and One-tier Master’s: HUF 43,700 (~EUR 110)
- Doctoral students: HUF 140,000 (~EUR 350) for the first 4 semesters, then HUF 180,000 (~EUR 450) for the last 4 semesters
- Accommodation contribution: Free dormitory space or HUF 40,000 (~EUR 100) per month for living expenses
- Medical insurance: Basic health services per Hungarian law and additional insurance up to HUF 65,000 (~EUR 160) annually

How to Apply for the Scholarship
Bachelors
1. Check Eligibility and Program Availability
- Confirm eligibility and that your home country is among the partner countries in the Stipendium Hungaricum program.
- Review available study programs for your country on the Stipendium Hungaricum website or via the application portal.
2. Prepare Required Documents
- Online application form: Complete all required fields in English and upload a recent photo.
- Motivation letter: Minimum one page in Times New Roman, font size 12.
- Proof of language proficiency: Submit proof of meeting the language requirements for your chosen study program.
- Academic certificates: Include high school diploma and transcripts, with translations if not in English or Hungarian.
- Identification: Provide a copy of your passport or national ID card.
- Acceptance of statement: Sign the “Statement for Application” in the online system.
3. Submit the Application
- Register and apply through the Stipendium Hungaricum online application system at apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu.
- Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2025, 2 p.m. Central European Time.
4. Nomination by Sending Partner
- After submission, applications are reviewed by your country’s designated Sending Partner (often a government agency).
- Only nominated applicants will move to the next phase.
5. University Admission Process
- If nominated, your application undergoes a technical check and an institutional evaluation by the Hungarian host university.
- Selected applicants will receive an acceptance letter and scholarship details by June-July 2025.
6. Post-selection Requirements
- Submit a medical certificate and any additional required documents as specified in the scholarship offer.
7. Visa and Enrollment
- Begin the visa application process upon acceptance and plan for arrival and enrollment at the host university in Hungary by September 2025.
Master’s Program Application Process
- Eligibility Check and Program Selection
- Verify eligibility and review available Master’s programs in your country’s list.
- Select the program through the online application portal.
- Prepare and Submit Required Documents
- Online application form with a recent photo.
- Motivation letter: Minimum one page in the language of study.
- Proof of language proficiency matching program requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and transcripts, translated if necessary.
- Identification document: Passport or national ID.
- Acceptance of statement in the online system.

- Complete and submit the application via the Stipendium Hungaricum online portal by January 15, 2025.

PhD Program Application Process

- Some doctoral programs may require a supervisor at the host institution. If required, applicants must secure an acceptance letter from the supervisor prior to applying.
- Prepare and Submit Required Documents
- Online application form with a recent photo.
- Motivation letter: Minimum one page in the language of study.
- Proof of language proficiency as specified by the program.
- Master’s degree certificate and transcripts, with translations if needed.
- Research plan: A minimum two-page outline of the proposed research in Times New Roman, font size 12.
- Letter of Recommendation: Signed by an academic supervisor or professor familiar with your work.
- Supervisor’s Statement (if required): A document confirming supervisor support.
- Identification document: Passport or national ID.

- Submit the Application

Key Differences for PhD Applications
- Supervisor Requirement: Many PhD programs require a supervisor at the host institution; this is not required for Master’s applicants.
- Research Plan and Recommendation Letter: PhD applicants must submit a research plan and a recommendation letter from an academic tutor, while Master’s applicants do not.
- More Comprehensive Evaluation: PhD applications undergo an in-depth review, focusing on research capability and the availability of a suitable supervisor.
