2025 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship at Hokkaido University

2025 JAPANESE GOVERNMENT(MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP (UNIVERSITY RECOMMENDATION)[Special Selection]“Graduate Program for Environmental Conservation Leadership for Post SDGs”

  • We started accepting scholarship applications from international students for the Graduate School of Environmental Science for the October 2025 intake.
  • The scholarship is offered under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program, titled “Graduate Program for Environmental Conservation Leadership for Post SDGs.”
  • Prospective students must contact potential supervisors to discuss their suitability for the scholarship.
  • It is mandatory to obtain agreement from the prospective supervisor before submitting the application.
  • All documents must be submitted through the prospective supervisor.

2. Qualifications

1) Eligibility:

  • The scholarship is available to international students with outstanding academic achievements at the graduate school level.
  • It applies to both new students entering Japan and those already staying in Japan.
  • Applicants must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.30/3.00 or higher in their previous degree programs (or current courses for those employed).
  • Students must maintain a GPA of 2.30/3.00 or above while receiving the scholarship.
  • Applicants must also meet one of the specified language requirements as outlined in section 2).

2) Language level/ability:

Applicants must meet one of the following conditions to demonstrate sufficient English language ability:

  • (1) Applicants must pass or achieve scores in English language proficiency tests equivalent to B2 or higher level in the CEFR at the time of application.
  • (2) Applicants must have completed school curriculums that qualify them for admission to Master’s or Doctoral courses at a Japanese graduate school, with English as the primary language of instruction.

3. Scholarship Period and Benefits

1)Duration of scholarship:

Master’s course: 2 years
Doctoral course: 3 years

2) Monthly allowance:

Master’s course: 144,000 JPY
Doctoral course: 145,000 JPY

3) Travel Expenses

MEXT will provide arrival and return ticket.

4) Tuition and other academic fees

Application fee: exempted
Matriculation fee: exempted
Tuition fees: exempted

4. Required Documents

1) Documents for Internal Screening

* The following should be prepared by an applicant. Please submit all documents via your prospective supervisor by email.

1) Application form for MEXT scholarship

2) Field of Study and Study Program (should include relevance of your research plan to SDGs)

3) A copy of applicant’s passport (or a copy of a certificate of family register, certificate of citizenship or other identification issued by the government of his/her home country)

4) Official academic transcript(s) for all years of last university/graduate school attended (issued by the university/graduate school attended. Grading System or Grading Scale information must be attached.)

5) Certificate of (prospective) graduation or a Diploma of last university/graduate school attended

6) Document(s) attesting to the applicant’s outstanding academic achievements at the last university attended (If applicable)

7) Recommendation letter from dean (or above) at the current university or institutions, addressed to the president of Hokkaido University

8) Abstracts of theses (should be concise and to the point)

9) Proof of language ability that meets any one of the conditions in above “2. Qualifications” (English Language proficiency test scores or a Medium of Instruction certificate)
